The purpose of Emergency & Exit Lighting
is to assist
occupants identify exits and paths of travel from a building in the
case of an emergency.
At

Testing & Maintenance - Existing
Installations
We can make it easy for you to take care of your
obligations under the Building Code of Australia for the maintenance
and testing of Emergency and Exit Lighting.
Obligations under the Building Code
are:

Maintenance and
testing of the system should be carried out every six months by
persons having appropriate qualifications and experience
applicable to this type of work.
-
At the completion of the
inspection, any deficiencies in the system must be rectified as
soon as practical.
-
Units that are not
operational between the test intervals, should be checked out and
repaired on an ongoing basis.
Procedures
In simple terms, testing of Emergency & Exit
Lighting consists of the following:

Checking to
make sure the Emergency & Exit lighting is working on 240
Volts
-
Ensuring the
test switch is functional
-
Check to
ensure the LED indicator is working.

90 minute test of
lighting:
·
After 30 minutes check to confirm all lamps are lit
up.
·
After 60 minutes check to confirm all lamps are lit
up.
·
After 90 minutes check to confirm all lamps are lit
up.
-
Recording results of the testing in the log
book, and making repairs and replacements, as required to ensure
compliance with the Building Code.

If a fault is found, depending on the nature of
the fault, fittings can be repaired. However, experience has shown
us, that more often than not, the cost of fault diagnosis and repair
in-situ can exceed the cost of the provision of a new fitting. That
is, the cost of parts & labour to repair an existing fitting
usually exceed the cost of simply replacing the fitting with a brand
new one. In these situations we would chose to replace the fitting
and thus save you money. In many cases, this will also lower your
power consumption, because new fittings are becoming more energy
efficient.
Legal Requirements, Code &
Standards
The Building Code of Australia requires that an
Exit Lighting System must:

Be installed to meet the
requirements as outlined in the applicable Australian
Standard.

Be clearly visible to
persons approaching an exit.
-
Be located in positions
where exits are not readily apparent, i.e. corridors, hallways and
lobbies, and have arrows directing occupants to an
exit.
-
Be located on, above or
adjacent to each door providing egress.
-
Be identified with clear
and legible writing using letters and symbols of adequate
size.
-
Be automatic in operation
in the event of a failure of power supply to the main lighting
system.
